The Underwriting Data Engineer organizes and analyzes raw data, builds data pipelines, and develops analytical programs & tools – using SQL, R, Python, etc. – to enhance the analytic capability and reliability of the Underwriting and Sales teams.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Thoroughly understand all Underwriting data sources, fields, and relationships, including historical claims, Medi-Span tables, NCPDP tables, and Capital Rx’s Book of Business data to interpret trends, identify patterns, and conduct complex data analyses in support of Underwriting and Sales business goals

  • Investigate new data sources for the purpose of building & maintaining data pipelines to clean, transform, and aggregate disparate data

  • Use agile software development to create, maintain, and improve Underwriting’s back-end systems for data extracts, pricing processes, and analytic tools to advance the department’s technical capabilities

  • Model front-end and back-end data sources to help draw a more comprehensive picture of user flows throughout the system and to enable powerful data analysis

  • Work closely with our Underwriting and Clinical teams to help build complex algorithms that provide useful insights into our data

  • Lead the analysis and development of new models and front-end tools that can be used to make predictions and answer questions for financial modeling & reporting

  • Collaborate with various teams across the company on data sources and analytic methodology in support of Underwriting and company objectives

  • Provide standard and ad-hoc analytics to support the Underwriting team for the successful completion of bid opportunities

  • Be an advocate for best practices and continued learning

  • Establish and document SOPs to ensure superior data quality and reliability

  • Assist in training and on-boarding new hires in Underwriting data, tools, and processes

  • Support the maintenance of the Underwriting code repository, including reviewing and managing all major and minor releases

  • Responsible for adherence to the Capital Rx Code of Conduct including reporting of noncompliance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, or IT

  • 3+ years of experience with Python, SQL, and data visualization/exploration tools; R experience is a major plus

  • 3+ years of proven experience in data analysis, such as financial analysis, actuarial services, accounting, pricing & underwriting

  • Familiarity with the AWS ecosystem, specifically Redshift and RDS

  • Experience in building or maintaining ETL processes

  • Exceptional technical knowledge in software engineering and programming languages

  • Excellent numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Track record of leading cross-functional initiatives, driving high performance, meeting deadlines, and executing on deliverables in a time-constrained environment

  • Ability to balance multiple complex projects simultaneously

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, especially for explaining technical concepts to nontechnical business leaders

  • Extremely flexible, highly organized, and able to shift priorities easily

  • Attention to detail & commitment to delivering high quality work product

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical claims is a plus

  • Knowledge of and passion for improving the health care industry a plus
